Tear stains aren't just a grooming issue. Understanding what actually causes them — and what role diet plays — changes how you approach them entirely.
If you have a Maltese, Bichon Frisé, or Pomeranian, you know the look: a persistent reddish-brown stain spreading from the inner corner of the eye across the muzzle. You've tried the wipes, maybe switched foods, maybe bought the supplements — and the stains keep coming back. Here's why, and what the science actually says about managing them.
What makes the color: porphyrin
The reddish-brown color in tear stains comes from porphyrins — iron-containing pigment compounds produced as byproducts of heme metabolism. Dogs excrete porphyrins through tears, saliva, and urine. When porphyrins sit on fur and are exposed to air and light, they oxidize and produce that characteristic rust-colored staining.
Here's the key distinction: porphyrin is the pigment that creates the color, not the underlying cause of the problem. Visible tear staining means the area is staying wet with porphyrin-rich tears — which points to excess tear production. The real question is why the tears are excessive in the first place.
Porphyrin is the result. The actual problem is excess tearing — and whatever is driving it.
Why dogs produce excess tears
Before looking at diet, the first thing to rule out is a structural or medical cause. Nasolacrimal duct (tear duct) obstruction or stenosis, entropion (eyelashes rubbing the cornea), conjunctivitis, corneal irritation, and eyelid abnormalities are all common anatomical reasons for excess tear production. These are especially important to consider if only one eye is affected, or if staining has suddenly worsened — both of which point away from a dietary cause.
Diet and grooming won't resolve structurally driven tear staining. The signs below warrant an ophthalmologic or dermatologic evaluation before changing anything else.
The microbial layer: what happens when fur stays wet
Chronically wet fur around the eyes is an ideal environment for microbial growth. Malassezia pachydermatis — the yeast commonly associated with ear and skin infections in dogs — has been documented in ocular surface infections as well. Secondary bacterial overgrowth is also common in persistently damp periocular skin.
If the stained area has an odor, the skin underneath appears red or irritated, or the fur is clumped and tacky rather than just discolored — microbial involvement is likely. This changes the management approach: cleaning and drying the area matters as much as any dietary intervention.
How diet connects to tear staining
Many owners notice improvement after switching foods, and there's a biologically plausible reason — but it works differently than most people assume. Diet doesn't directly increase porphyrin production. The pathway is indirect: a dietary ingredient triggers an inflammatory or immune response → inflammation affects the periocular skin and mucous membranes → tear production increases → more porphyrin-rich tears contact the fur → staining becomes more visible.
Diet isn't creating the pigment. Diet-driven inflammation is increasing the tear volume that carries the pigment.
Hydrolyzed diets vs. single-ingredient foods
Hydrolyzed diets break protein into very small peptides the immune system is less likely to recognize as allergens. They're most useful as a diagnostic tool for strict elimination trials — but research shows some dogs still react to residual peptides, so they're not a universal fix. Strict implementation still matters.
Single-ingredient diets simplify the ingredient profile to make reaction tracking easier. "Single-ingredient" doesn't automatically mean hypoallergenic — but a shorter ingredient list means fewer variables. This approach only works if treats, chews, and supplements are simplified to match. Changing the main food while leaving everything else unchanged produces inconclusive results.
High-quality clinical trials specifically demonstrating dietary improvement in tear staining are limited. The biological rationale is sound, but individual results vary. Give any dietary change at least 6–8 weeks of consistent implementation before evaluating — and document what you changed and when.
Practical checklist
- First Rule out structural causes. Nasolacrimal duct issues, entropion, and conjunctivitis won't resolve with diet. If one eye is noticeably worse, or staining has suddenly worsened, see a vet before changing anything else.
- Watch for Tear staining alongside itching, ear infections, and paw licking is a stronger signal of food hypersensitivity than staining alone — and warrants a proper elimination diet with veterinary guidance.
- If eliminating Change everything at once — main food, treats, chews, flavored supplements. A strict elimination trial means no exceptions. Anything left unchanged is a variable that undermines the result.

Tear stains are colored by porphyrin, but porphyrin isn't the problem — it's the signal. Working backward: excess tears → something causing excess tears → structural issue, microbial environment, or dietary inflammation. That sequence determines what actually needs to change.
Diet is one lever in that system. It won't fix a blocked tear duct or entropion. But for dogs where food hypersensitivity is a contributing factor, simplifying the ingredient profile — in food and treats alike — is one of the more consistent things owners can do to reduce overall inflammatory burden. And that matters well beyond tear stains.
